Community engagement & Climate mitigation
Community engagement & Climate mitigation
Lakeshore Agro-Processors Enterprise (LAPE) engages communities in climate change mitigation through an inclusive contract farming model that transforms smallholder farmers into commercial producers while promoting climate-smart agriculture. Through structured out-grower schemes and crop production associations, LAPE provides farmers with access to improved seed, inoculants, extension services, and training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This approach strengthens resilience to climate variability, enhances soil health, and improves productivity while ensuring reliable market access for commodities such as soybean, sunflower, cassava, and rice.
Beyond production, LAPE integrates environmental stewardship into its community partnerships by supporting tree seedling production and distribution as both a climate mitigation strategy and an income-generating enterprise. Youth and women are empowered to establish nurseries that contribute to reforestation, land restoration, and watershed protection. The provision of seedlings to business partners enhances soil conservation, reduces land degradation, and builds long-term adaptive capacity within farming communities.
LAPE further advances climate action through community outreach and capacity building initiatives. Farmers and youth groups receive training on climate change mitigation strategies, sustainable land management, and value addition technologies. The enterprise also supports off-farm climate adaptation businesses derived from agro-processing by-products, including livestock feed production and related enterprises. Through these integrated interventions, LAPE aligns community development with environmental sustainability, creating green jobs while strengthening rural resilience to climate change.
